seriously…

I was eating a donut this morning with my coffee and it suddenly hit me. There are a lot of insane people out there who don’t drink coffee, right? Some of them eat donuts.

What would the point of that be, exactly? I mean, why even bother eating the damn thing?

Coffee and donuts are one of the great combinations of the world. What in the hell is wrong with some folks?

“I like this cup because it has the logo of the master’s program that I’m in here in Korea. It’s also a nice sized cup that I can take everywhere I go. Also, I’ve always been one to conserve where I can, so I carry it with me everywhere. I use it when I go to cafes and coffeehouses just because why use a disposable cup when you can conserve? I love it so much that I bought another when I took a leave of absence from school and got a job. So, now I have one that is in my backpack and one that is in my office”

whew…kinda

Ok, I had to scrap everything and create a whole new Coppermine gallery. This means that I could only upload the pics that I had saved on my Mac, which unfortunately is something I stopped doing for a while. Also, none of the descriptions of the cups are there, although they are still on this page with the thumbnails. Someday I might go back and match them all up and add descriptions by hand, but that will be a long, painful process.

Thank you for your patience.

crapitty crap crap

Ok, so when I switched hosts I somehow screwed up the Coppermine gallery that had all the coffee cup pics in it. I am working to get that fixed but in the meantime, please feel free to continue to submit your cups and I will get them posted as soon as I can.

Thanks!

senseo

Posted on Tuesday 11 April 2006

I have a Senseo coffee maker.

Here are some quotes I have collected from the web about it:

The Senseo Coffee Machine will brew a weak, bitter cup of coffee easier and faster than any brewing method on the market. If you prefer a weaker cup of coffee, but find instant coffee too challenging to brew, you may like the Senseo.

There is no dancing around this topic. The Senseo makes awful coffee. It’s weak and bitter. Granted I’m a coffee snob, who roasts his own coffee and brews espresso and french press every day, so consider the source. On the coffee hierarchy, I’d put the Senseo higher than instant coffee and lower than canned drip.

The truth is the Senseo makes dreadful coffee. The machine does a disservice to coffee.

Blah, blah, blah. Like my dad used to say, opinions are like assholes. Everybody has one and nobody thinks their own stinks.

I am also a coffee snob. I never buy flavored coffee and always get the gourmet stuff, whole beans of course, and grind them myself for every pot. I own a French press as well as a good drip coffee maker. I decided I wanted to try a Senseo when I realized that since I started taking care of the kids full time I never know if I am going to have time to drink a whole pot of coffee or a half a cup. I felt like I was wasting much more coffee than I was drinking. I thought if this thing makes even halfway decent coffee I will come out ahead of the game.
Turns out I was pleasantly surprised by the quality of the coffee it made. I have had it for over a year and am still happy with it. I buy the dark roast pods and have never found them to be bitter or weak. About the only complaint I have is the lack of variety in pods, at least in this country. I found a site in the Netherlands where you can buy all kinds of different blends and roasts, but it seems a little pricey for me right now.
I was happy to see something at the grocery store today, however. Senseo has put out cappuccino pods! They have a little plastic thing in the bottom of the pod that seems to have some kind of powdered creamer in it. It makes the pod bigger so you have to use the double pod insert and you only get 10 in the bag but it tastes pretty good and will make a nice treat every so often.

my favorite coffee songs

Posted on Sunday 2 April 2006

Ok, we are going to try something a little different.

Since the submissions have slowed down to a snail’s pace lately I think it’s time to make the occasional post about other things coffee related. Today it is going to be about music.

Coffee is a wonderful gift from God (sorry, Mormons) and has inspired many great things in this world, including some truly amazing songs. In giving my iTunes library a quick review (all 6334 files) I spotted three great songs about that sweet, caffeinated elixir of life.

I present them below, along with links to the artist’s websites. Feel free to download them and give a listen with a cup of steaming java:

Todd Rundgren - Espresso (All Jacked Up) (this is an AAC file so you need iTunes to listen)

Black Flag - Black Coffee (also an AAC file. If you don’t have iTunes quit being such a pussy and get it)

MX-80 - Donuts and Coffee (this song is an instrumental so although it is not about coffee lyrically, it is definitely wired. check out this band…they are great)

There you have it. My three favorite songs about coffee. I will post more as I come up with them and if the mood strikes you, feel free to suggest some of your own favorite coffee-related tunes. Either send me an email or just leave a comment.
